Bob's Story

Born in Portland, Oregon, as the third son of Stella and Frank Hayek, Bob Hayek was bright and hard-working. He had a paper route, carried bags at the train depot, and worked at his uncle's printing business to earn money for activities and the family.  His grades suffered because he was often so tired in school he would fall asleep, so rather than go to college he went to work in the family bakery business.
He quickly moved into management responsibilities and sought special training at the National Institute of Baking in Chicago, where he was a top student.  He grew the Three Brothers' Bakery into one of the largest bakeries in Portland, providing an income to his parents and brother in the process.  In 1943, Bob married Marion DeKoning, a graduate of the University of Oregon.  During the early years of their marriage, it became necessary to close down the Three Brothers' Bakery, but Bob was proud that all creditors were paid and he was able to use capital from the business to start his stock portfolio.
Bob went to work for the Marckx Bakery in Gresham, Oregon, to support his growing family, which included son Richard and daughter Carolyn.  After helping to build up that business, he accepted a position with Ruth Ashbrook Bakery in Seattle, necessitating a move to Seattle in 1959.  After a year in Seattle, the family moved to a new home on Mercer Island and joined the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church that year.
After several years with the Pink Elephant Bakery in Kent, WA, Bob decided to switch careers and affiliated with John L. Scott Real Estate on Mercer Island.  When the housing market hit a slump, Bob decided to retire at age 61, at which time he and Marion began their snowbird lifestyle, traveling back and forth to Hemet, CA.  At Golden Village RV Park, Bob led the bicycle club and played pool while Marion participated in the chorus.
Bob finally became a grandfather at age 67 when Carolyn's son Jonathan was born.  Seven years later Richard's son Bryan was born, followed by Jonathan's sister Laura and Richard's daughter Lisa.  Jonathan has been employed for several years with an investment firm in Chicago.  The other grandchildren are still university students.
Marion's cancer diagnosis in 2005 and her death in 2006 were a shock to the family.  Bob and Marion had been living at Friendly Village Mobile Home Park in Redmond for about 15 years.  Family and friends persuaded him to move to Fairwinds Retirement Community in October, 2006.
Although he was already 94 years old when he moved to Fairwinds, Bob created a new life for himself.  He gave up his car, joined the Redmond Presbyterian Church and made many new friends,  He organized pool tournaments, did his exercises in the swimming pool, walked 2 miles a day, continued to manage his investments, took a cruise to Mexico, went river rafting, went on the duck boat tour of Seattle, visited the Seattle Art Museum and more.  His energy and enthusiasm for every activity were amazing.
In addition to children Carolyn (Kirkland) and Richard (Federal Way). Bob is survived by his niece Cheryl of Portland, Oregon, the daughter of his oldest brother, Herb.
